A Georgia native, Kate Riney, dreamed of going to NYC for college and becoming an independent film director, but actually ended up at Georgia State University and traded her film studies for a major in social work, falling in love with Atlanta and advocacy over the next four years. After graduating from GSU, she spent two months in Kenya practicing public health, chaplaincy, and community development. Upon return to the states she began ministry as the Outreach Coordinator for House of the Rock, an urban missional church plant in Atlanta.

Kate has performed in numerous plays and concerts over the years as well as exhibited her photography, drawing, and painting. She is a classically trained dancer and a certified coffee snob. When not holding a book or pen, she enjoys an afternoon at the lake, a mountain hike, or exploring a new city.

In addition, to enjoying the arts and outdoors, Kate is an advocate for survivors of human trafficking and women and children who are sexually exploited. She has completed internships with Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Faith to Action, received training from Wellspring Living, Operation Mobilization, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and UNICEF. She was a 2012 Community Engagement Fellow with Drew Charter School and Street Grace and she is currently the president of the Mercer University’s International Justice Mission Campus Chapter. Her research interests include strategies for international and community development through nonprofit collaboration, liberation theology and modern slavery, Christianity and the arts, and social justice shaped by Christian ethics.

In January 2013 Kate came to McAfee to pursue her M.Div and Masters in Organizational Leadership. She’s excited to be managing editor of Tableaux Online and have the task of curating thoughtful, prophetic, and creative work and sharing it with the rest of the world.
